Carneiro calls for the Public Ministry to intervene on Ventura posters

The PS leader today called on the Public Ministry to intervene regarding André Ventura’s presidential campaign posters so that the mechanisms provided for by law can be activated to sanction “those who undermine the rule of law”.

At the entrance to a session at FAUL (Federation of the Urban Area of Lisbon) of the PS on the State Budget for 2026 (OE2026), José Luís Carneiro was questioned by journalists about the recent statements by Chega’s president, André Ventura, that to end corruption in Portugal “three Salazars” were needed.

“It’s a serious statement, just like the posters that Chega has just put up in the country. They are posters with messages that encourage hatred towards certain social origins of populations that live, that are integrated in our country”, he condemned.

The PS leader’s appeal “is for the competent authorities, namely the Public Ministry, to be attentive to what messages are and the dissemination of messages that violate the values of the Constitution”.

“Because this is the duty of these institutions, to have no doubts about activating the mechanisms that the law provides to sanction those who violate the rule of law”, he defended.

The statements about the three Salazars, for Carneiro, show that “there is someone who today leads a political party who wanted a country that was one of the countries in the world with the highest infant mortality rates, the highest illiteracy rates and the highest emigration rates” due to “the escape from poverty and absolute misery and the escape from the colonial war”.

“The Portuguese should be aware that there is a leader of a political party, who is now a presidential candidate, who is what he defends for his country. Not one, but three Salazars, which would be tripling, here, the gravity of all that were past choices that we all don’t have a good memory of”, he condemned.

Eight gypsy associations will file a complaint with the Public Prosecutor’s Office against posters by presidential election candidate André Ventura relating to the community and are considering taking precautionary measures to remove the advertisements.

On behalf of the eight associations, the vice-president of the Letras Nómadas association pointed out that constitutionalist Vitalino Canas has already admitted that there may be signs of a crime, so the various associations are gathering evidence to file a complaint with the Public Prosecutor’s Office, at the same time as they are considering moving forward with precautionary measures.

At issue are posters with messages targeting specific communities, including one that reads “Gypsies must obey the law”.
