The following article contains spoilers from an episode of Emmerdale that hasn’t aired on ITV1 yet, but can be viewed on ITVX.
Last week in Emmerdale, Caleb Miligan (William Ash) heard a noise coming from a depot truck that had just returned from overseas.
Hiding in between stacks of boxes was a young woman, called Anya.
Caleb was horrified and immediately knew what the police would think if they saw her. They were due to arrive within minutes to speak to him about Joe Tate (Ned Porteous) hitting Jimmy King (Nick Miles) with his car – it was a problem that had showed up at the worst possible time.
Ruby Miligan (Beth Cordingly) then swanned in with her red coat and glasses, announcing to Caleb that they were off out to lunch.
Their date had to wait though, as Ruby immediately realised her husband was hiding something and then discovered Anya in the truck.
Thanks to Joe, the police never found Anya, which allowed Ruby to take her back home.
At Mill Cottage, Ruby allowed Anya to use the shower and made her some dinner as well. She was intrigued by where Anya had come from, and what she went through before getting on the truck.
Unfortunately, because of how traumatised Anya was, she barely spoke. Caleb then entered and was staggered to see Anya in his home. He viewed the lady as someone who would get his business shut down, but Ruby saw her as a human being.
It was their opposing views towards the situation that sparked a major argument between Caleb and Ruby yesterday. Annoyed that Ruby wasn’t considering the criminal ramifications of keeping a stowaway in their home, Caleb accused her of wanting a project because she doesn’t actually have a real job.
But ultimately, Ruby has connected with Anya because she knows what it’s like to be a vulnerable young woman who is completely alone with secrets she’s too afraid to tell. Both of Ruby’s children don’t live with her anymore, so there’s a maternal element to it as well – she really wants to help Anya and ensure she is safe.
In the latest episode of the ITV soap, Ruby headed upstairs to find Anya, but discovered she was gone.
The argument Caleb and Ruby had yesterday happened right in front of Anya, so it’s highly likely she sensed she wasn’t welcome and scarpered with only the clothes she had on her back.
But without any way of contacting her, Caleb and Ruby were left in a state of simply wondering where she had gone, and hoping that she wasn’t in anymore danger.
As Ruby worried, Caleb took the opportunity to apologise to her for not understanding her point of view on the matter. He tried to comfort his wife by saying that if Anya is anything like Ruby, she’d be alright.
All they know about Anya is that she has a young daughter and came here in the back of a truck.
She has no plans, no relatives in England, so where has she gone?
And will we ever find out who told her to get in the truck?
