The American online retail giant Amazon announced this Tuesday, the 28th, the elimination of 14 thousand jobs, without specifying in which locations, but referring to a “global reduction”.
“The reductions we announced today are part of an ongoing effort to become even stronger by further reducing bureaucracy, eliminating layers and reallocating resources,” said Vice President of Human Resources and Technology, Beth Galetti, in a statement published on Amazon’s website.
According to the person responsible, “this will involve reductions in some areas and hiring in others, but will result in an overall reduction of approximately 14,000 vacancies”.
On Monday, the CNBC news chain reported, citing close sources, that Amazon would lay off up to 30,000 workers this week, which represents 10% of the employees currently on staff and will constitute the biggest cut in the number of workers in the company’s history.
According to the same sources, these layoffs are part of a cuts plan that began in 2022.
Over the past three years, Amazon has progressively eliminated around 27,000 jobs and has never laid off so many workers at once.
The cut will mainly affect departments such as Human Resources, service personnel, operations, devices and other areas, CNBC said, adding that the managers of the different affected teams announced on Monday that they will send layoff emails during the week.
Different websites specializing in technology, such as Layoffs.fyi, have warned that during 2025 around 98,000 jobs will be lost in 216 companies in the sector in the United States.
The Seattle, Washington-based company expects to present third-quarter results on Thursday, and analysts predict a turnover increase of around 11% year-on-year and a slight drop in net profit due to the costs of investing in artificial intelligence (AI) or logistics, as well as the costs of the current restructuring.
