On Monday, the National Rally for Reform and Development (Tawasul) party, the largest opposition party in Mauritania, organized a protest demonstration against corruption and to demand an end to the widespread mismanagement and mismanagement of state resources.

Party leaders said that they decided to organize simultaneous protests in rejection of the worsening corruption and deteriorating services in the country, including the capital, Nouakchott, and a number of provincial capitals.

In Nouakchott, party supporters gathered in front of the government headquarters.

Mohamed Ould Mohamed Embarek, deputy head of the party, said – during the protest – that the government is responsible for the corruption being talked about because it stands behind the appointment of those accused of corruption, and he called on the government to lift its hand from the oversight institutions such as Parliament and the Court of Accounts so that it can carry out its work freely in stopping corruption.

This demonstration comes days after the publication of the Court of Accounts report, which showed major imbalances and mismanagement of state resources and led to the dismissal of 30 government officials and their referral to justice.

A week ago, President Mohamed Ould Sheikh Ghazouani stressed that anyone involved in suspected corruption will be held accountable.

Al-Ghazwani called on the oversight and inspection bodies to exercise their full powers, stressing that he obligated the government to implement the recommendations of the oversight and inspection bodies.

He expressed his confidence that there is no reform without eliminating all forms of corruption, and Al-Ghazwani stressed that corruption reduces the effectiveness of the government’s efforts in the field of development.

He added, “I am certain that there is no hope for the success of reform without eliminating administrative and financial forms of corruption.”
