The Georgian Dream, the party in power in Georgia and pro-Russia, called this Tuesday for the illegalization of the country’s three largest opposition political forces and announced that it will formally request this from the Constitutional Court.
“It is necessary to declare these parties unconstitutional and ban them,” said parliament speaker Shalva Papuashvili, referring to the pro-Western United National Movement, Coalition for Change and Lelo.
Papuashvili stressed that the Constitution of Georgia “considers unacceptable the activities of parties that aim to violently reverse the constitutional order.”
For this reason, he explained, the Georgian Dream deputies will formally present the respective petition to the Constitutional Courtwhich must make a decision within nine months from the moment of admission for processing.
The Constitutional Court of Georgia is made up of nine judges and requires the favorable vote of at least six to approve rulings, which cannot be appealed.
The three opposition parties whose ban demands the Georgian Dream obtained, in total, 49 out of 150 deputies in the October 2024 parliamentary elections, but reported that the results were fraudulent and resigned from their seats.
“Regardless of the decision the Constitutional Court takes, we will continue the fight against the pro-Russian authorities in Georgia, who deprive the country of its freedom and independence”, said, in statements to the media, Anna Tsilidzde, from the United National Movement, founded by the imprisoned former Georgian president, Mikhail Saakashvili.
The Georgian opposition maintains a fierce confrontation with the government due to its decision, in November 2024, to postpone negotiations on accession to the European Union (EU) until 2028 and to move closer to the Kremlin (Russian presidency).
