A recently published study has shown that longer, continuous walks can significantly reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Researchers from the University of Sydney and Universidad Europea in Spain found that people who walk for 10-15 minutes at a time every day can reduce their risk by up to two-thirds. These findings could change the way we think about daily exercise.

The study, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, examined the impact of walking habits on the health of people who are generally inactive. Among people who took fewer than 8,000 steps per day, it was found that those who divided their steps into one or two longer sessions had a significantly lower risk of death and cardiovascular events than those whose steps consisted of many short walks.

Dr. Matthew Ahmadi, one of the study’s lead authors, emphasized that it is not necessary to walk 10,000 steps daily to achieve health benefits. In fact, just one or two longer walks per day, each lasting at least 10-15 minutes, could provide significant benefits, especially for people who don’t walk much.

The study included 33,560 adults ages 40 to 79 who typically walked fewer than 8,000 steps per day and had no history of cardiovascular disease or cancer. Participants wore research-grade wristbands for a week to record both their step count and the distribution of their steps throughout the day. Researchers tracked their health outcomes for about eight years and found that people who walked for 10-15 minutes at a time every day had only a 4 percent chance of experiencing a cardiovascular event, compared to a 13 percent risk for those who walked continuously for just 5 minutes a day.
