According to a person close to Rodrigo Mondragón, around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 25, security elements from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) would have beaten and violently detained the Cruz Azul fan “who was loaded alive into an official van.” “From that moment on, nothing was heard from him again,” he said.
“When family and friends arrived at the scene to request information, neither the UNAM security personnel nor the elements of the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC-CdMx) who were in the area provided truthful information. […] During those hours, family and friends were calling Locatel, hospitals and Public Ministries in search of information about Rodrigo Mondragón, without obtaining any response,” he explained.
The UNAM Civil Protection Directorate issued a statement on Sunday morning, stating that at the end of the match between Cruz Azul and Monterrey at the Estadio Olimpico Universitario, when the people remaining in the parking lots of the sports venue were being removed, “a person in an apparent state of intoxication verbally and physically attacked the stadium security personnel, violently impeding their work.”
“The person managed to be subdued by said security elements for delivery to the authorities. During the journey of his transfer, he fainted, so the support of paramedics was immediately requested to provide the corresponding medical attention. Despite the efforts to revive him, unfortunately, the absence of vital signs was determined,” he said. Given this situation, he requested the support of personnel from the Secretariat of Citizen Security and the Attorney General’s Office of Mexico City, to initiate the corresponding investigations and define responsibilities of the personnel who were involved in the events.
