The “Dr. Agustín O’Horán” General Hospital carried out a multi-organ procurement that made it possible to offer a new chance at life to two women who were waiting for a kidney transplant at the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) in Mérida, as an act of generosity and human solidarity, a bulletin reports.
The director of the Yucatán State Transplant Center (Ceetry), Jorge Martínez Ulloa Torres, explained that the donor was a 23-year-old girl, who after dying became a heroine by donating her organs.
Thanks to the altruistic decision of her family, it was possible to successfully transplant two kidneys to women aged 42 and 53, who had waited more than three years for this opportunity of life.
Both procedures, explained the state official, were carried out successfully in the High Specialty Medical Unit of the IMSS in Mérida.
Martínez Ulloa Torres highlighted the joint work of the participating institutions. He stated that this achievement reflects the effectiveness of the State and National Health Services Exchange System, promoted by the head of the Yucatan Health Secretariat (SSY), Judith Elena Ortega Canto, who has promoted a policy of inter-institutional cooperation that prioritizes the well-being of patients above any affiliation.
“This case reflects the strength of a supportive and coordinated system, where the generosity of a family and the commitment of health personnel translate into hope. This is how a more humane Yucatan is built with greater justice in health,” said Judith Ortega.
The head of the state Health Secretariat recalled that the National Transplant Center (Cenatra) has recognized the “Dr. Agustín O’Horán” Hospital as a medical center that has established itself as a state leader in multi-organ donation, not only for meeting its own hospital demand, but also for its spirit of solidarity in supporting other institutions that require it.
To date, he added, the hospital has carried out 50 multi-organ procurements, obtaining vital organs such as heart, liver and kidneys, as well as 354 tissue donations – including corneas, bone and skin – that have restored health and hope to dozens of patients.
Judith Ortega publicly recognized the efforts of the medical, nursing, social work, psychology and hospital coordination staff, whose commitment makes it possible for organ donation to continue transforming lives in Yucatán.
