There were 222 original candidates for the Nuno Júdice Poetry Prize, among them the You enter the House through the Courtyard, signed with the pseudonym of Clara Fazendawhich was chosen by the jury and will be published by the publisher Dom Quixote, promoter of the award, in March 2026. The winner was announced this Wednesday, in a session at the Buchholz bookstore, in Lisbon.
Clara Fazenda is actually Carla Louro, born in Santarém in 1969 and architect at Abrantes City Council. Among his favorite poets is precisely Nuno Júdice, the poet who died in March 2024, in honor of whom the Prize was created, and also Ana Luísa Amaral and Adília Lopes. “He had been thinking about putting together his poems in a book for seven years, but he only dared to do so when he saw the announcement of the Nuno Júdice Poetry Prize“, reveals the publisher in a statement.
Enter the House through the Courtyard will mark Carla Louro’s literary debut. The jury of this first edition of the Nuno Júdice Poetry Prize speaks of “an intimate, feminine and very emotional book, although never sentimental, as well as clear but not simplistic poetry. It is also important to note that the text has extraordinary restraint, especially taking into account its great depth».
It also highlights originality, in a work “where there is no shortage of apparently simple analogies and metaphors, but which turn out to be unforgettable and brilliant”. For example, those that “relate to lines, which as fast are the lines of the poem or the lines of the notebooks in which one writes as they are the sewing threads”.
The jury was chaired by Maria do Rosário Pedreira, poet and editor, and also included Cecília Andrade, editor of Dom Quixote and books by Nuno Júdice, Ricardo Marques, poet, translator and researcher, Filipa Leal, poet and journalist, and Sandra Mendes, editor of LeYa.
