Simón Levy is arrested in Portugal; we know this

MEXICO CITY.- Mexican authorities reported the arrest of Simon Levyformer undersecretary of Tourism Planning of Mexico, in Portugal.

The Mexico City Prosecutor’s Office reported that the international agency Interpol detained the former official, and indicated that he has two arrest warrants in force in Mexico, derived from different criminal proceedings.

These orders were originated by his failure to attend seven court hearings between 2021, 2022 and 2025.

Simón Levy denies arrest; accuses attempted murder

In a live link, in which only the voice of the former official was heard, with the journalist Luis CardenasLevy denied being detained in Portugal and assured that it was a “smokescreen” because they tried to kill him.

“It is completely false […] On the contrary, I received an attack almost 10 hours ago. I’m alive, for security reasons you can’t say exactly where I am but I’m free”.

Levy told the journalist that he was in Washington DC, and assured that two armed men shot at him, however, he would have reacted in time to get into his car – armored – and flee the scene.

He also said he had a security team, but did not give details on the subject.

“Mexicans: I’m perfectly fine. They wanted to kill me and also invent a thousand other things. I am fine and in good health. I love you, I’m going to rest today“, he wrote in social networks.

The former official maintained that the reason for the alleged attack against him was because of his critical stance towards Andrés Manuel López Obradorand the governments of his party. He stated that he has received death threats “if he does not leave the former president alone.”

What do we know about the arrest of Simón Levy in Portugal?

The capital’s Prosecutor’s Office announced that Interpol would have arrested Simón Levy in Portugal as a result of a immigration alert activated due to his travels abroad.

In its statement it reads:

“The FGJCDMX maintains close coordination with the Attorney General’s Office and the National Central Office of Interpol Mexico to carry out the necessary judicial and immigration procedures that allow the accused to be prosecuted and the victims’ right to access justice.”.

Regarding the arrest warrants, he noted that they were issued due to his failure to attend seven court hearings between 2021, 2022 and 2025 related to two criminal proceedings.

The first started in December 2021 by crimes against the environment and liability of construction directors responsible for the construction of a property that violated regulations, and then failed to attend the accusation hearings in August 2022 and August 2025.

Although he was the beneficiary of an amparo in 2022, it was rendered ineffective as he did not appear for the second time at the charging hearing.

In the second case, started in November 2021, by threats and intentional damage to other people’s property.

The accused accumulated five absences from court hearings between December 2021 and October 2022, which is why an arrest warrant was issued on August 4, 2022, which remains in force.
