“I’m very curious to know what’s going to happen tonight, I’m actually quite optimistic.” Henri Bontenbal, candidate of the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) for this Wednesday’s legislative elections in the Netherlands, hopes to achieve at least a second place. “I’m very confident,” echoed Rob Jetten of the progressive liberal party Democrats 66 (D66), to whom journalists paid close attention. The Dutch returned to the polls, less than two years after the last electionsand the dispute appears to be the most exciting in recent times.
As in November 2023, the favorite in the polls is Geert Wilders, from the Freedom Party (PVV, far right). In second place, in addition to the CDA and D66, the Labor Party/Greens (PvdA/GL) are in line. Whoever achieves this position will be decisive for the political orientation of the next Government. It is a close race after an exhaustive campaign, focused on the themes of governability and stability, precisely what was lacking in the outgoing legislature. All major political forces want to exclude the PVV from power, but the alternatives are limited.
