AOrder of Nurses considered this Wednesday that the possible reduction in spending on the NHS “cannot involve reducing access” to care and that “the focus must be on increasing efficiency and reducing waste”.
Opresident of the Order of Nurses (OE), Luís Filipe Barreira, stated, in a statement, that “there must be more rigorous management and control of public expenditure“, with the reduction in the health budget.
The OE president warned that any cut that affects human resourcesnamely the hiring of nurses, compromises quality and safety of care.
“The reduction in the budget cannot have an impact on the new hiring of health professionals, particularly nurses, whose shortage, according to the most recent data, exceeds 14 thousand professionals in the NHS”, reads the statement.
According to Luís Filipe Barreira, without approved PDOs, it is not possible to hire nursesdefending a “urgent reinforcement” of these professionals in the SNS.
“Due to the shortage of professionals and the workload of those who remain in office, ‘the quality and safety of care is at stake’”, he added.
