Hurricane “Melissa” leaves 25 dead in Haiti; goes to Bahamas

Hurricane “Melissa” left behind Haiti, where there were 25 deaths, and Cuba, where “substantial damage” was reported; It is heading to the Bahamas and could accelerate again.

Currently, “Melissa” is moving northeast at about 26 kilometers per hour (km/h). Its movement toward the northeast is expected to accelerate over the next few days. Based on the forecast track, the core of Melissa is expected to cross the southeastern or central Bahamas tonight and pass near or west of Bermuda late Thursday night and early Thursday morning.

Maximum sustained winds reach 150 km/h with even higher gusts. It is possible that it will intensify tonight and tomorrow, and then weaken. Hurricane-force winds extend up to 95 km from the center. Tropical storm force winds extend up to 295 km.

Additionally, the NHC is recording hurricane conditions in the warning area in the southeastern and central Bahamas, and they are expected to continue through tonight. Tropical storm conditions persist in the Turks and Caicos Islands and are expected to continue through tonight. Hurricane conditions are expected in Bermuda late Thursday and
Thursday night, while tropical storm conditions are forecast earlier Thursday.

In the southeastern Bahamas, rainfall accumulations of between 125 and 250 millimeters (mm) are expected during Thursday morning, which will cause flash flooding in some areas, the NHC detailed. Rainfall accumulations of between 25 and 75 mm are expected in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Heavy rain may begin to affect Bermuda on Thursday or Thursday night.

In southern Hispaniola, additional rainfall accumulations of between 25 and 50 mm are expected during
tonight, with local maximum accumulations of up to a thousand mm.

“In eastern Cuba, rainfall has decreased. However, additional scattered showers are expected tonight, with rainfall accumulations of 25 to 50 mm. With total storm rainfall of 25 to 50 centimeters (cm), possibly up to 63 cm in mountainous terrain, life-threatening and potentially catastrophic flash flooding and landslides will likely persist into the evening,” the NHC detailed.

The waves generated by “Melissa” will continue to affect parts of Hispaniola, Jamaica, eastern Cuba and the Cayman Islands during
the rest of the day, the NCH said. It will affect the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands over the next few days; and will extend into Bermuda later this week, causing life-threatening surf conditions and rip currents.

In Haiti there are now 25 dead and 18 people missing, according to the Haitian Civil Protection Agency. Most of the deceased are located in the city of Petit-Goave, where “Melissa” destroyed at least 80 houses and damaged 160 more homes.

Later, Díaz-Canel added that, after maintaining communication with the leaders of the eastern provinces of Cuba, “control over the situation is maintained. We have prepared for the worst scenario and the measures have been effective,” he said.

In turn, Hurricane “Melissa” has left one dead and one missing in the Dominican Republic; and eight dead in Jamaica, where the meteor entered with historic power, reflecting the changes that the climate emergency has forced on the oceans.
