A decade ago, smart speakers with built-in voice assistants were the new big thing, and many imagined them quickly evolving into highly intelligent companions. But the reality was different, as virtual helpers like Alexa, Siri and Google Assistant seemed to be standing still for years. This is now beginning to change with the emergence of generative AI technologies. Google has introduced Gemini Home, a new version of its voice assistant that can be tested in an early access phase.
Gemini Home is currently available on select devices such as the Google Nest Hub (2nd Gen), Google Nest Audio, Google Nest Mini (2nd Gen), and Google Nest Hub Max. These models support Gemini Live, which enables natural, conversational interaction with the assistant. While other models don’t offer the full Gemini Live experience, they do support most of Gemini Home’s other features.
An important aspect of using Gemini Home is that once you switch from Google Assistant to Gemini Home, you cannot go back. This could be a deciding factor for some users before deciding to upgrade. Google is currently collecting feedback from users to further improve features and fix errors that may occur during use.
To participate in the Early Access program, users must open the Google Home app on their mobile device, tap their profile picture, and then navigate to Early Access settings. After registration, it may take some time until participation is confirmed. Once this is done, users will receive a notification in the app that will guide them through the setup process.
Using Gemini Live requires a Google Home Premium subscription, which is offered in two tiers. The standard version costs $10 per month or $100 per year, while the advanced tier with additional features like a camera history search costs $20 per month or $200 per year. Both subscriptions provide access to Gemini Live, allowing users to choose based on their needs.
Google offers numerous examples to get you started. Users can get quick answers to factual questions or have complex topics explained in simple words. Although Gemini Home is not yet at the level of C-3PO, it shows that development is heading in that direction.
