In Mannheim, around 500 employees at the Coca-Cola site joined a warning strike to draw attention to the ongoing collective bargaining. The Food, Pleasure and Restaurants union (NGG) has called for this action to increase the pressure on the company. The employees are demanding more recognition and fair wages, which should be reflected in a retroactive wage increase of 150 euros from September 1st and an additional wage increase of five percent.
Stephanie Albicker, NGG union secretary for the Mannheim-Heidelberg region, emphasizes the urgency of the demands. Despite the strikes, industry experts expect the impact on consumers to remain moderate. Coca-Cola has adapted its delivery structures to avoid bottlenecks and is intensifying exchanges with food retailers.
The company is currently offering a pay increase of 1.5 percent for 2026, which the union considers to be inadequate. Coca-Cola argues that this offer takes into account the current challenging economic situation. Further talks are planned in November in Hamburg to reach an agreement.
Interestingly, Coca-Cola recently increased prices effective September 1 and reported a five percent increase in sales last quarter, which was reflected in increased profits of $3.7 billion. These economic successes contrast with employee demands for higher wages and better working conditions.
