Woman jailed for stealing cheese and butter from Manchester station

In a crime befitting an episode of Wallace and Gromit, a woman has been jailed after stealing cheese and butter from a shop in Manchester Piccadilly station.

Hayley Skinner, 35, stole five packets of cheese and four tubs of butter from the station.

This theft breached a two-year Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) that barred Skinner from entering Manchester Piccadilly unless she was intending to travel.

Skinner was jailed for 20 weeks at Manchester City Magistrate’s Court on 21st October.

She admitted theft and breach of her CBO at an earlier hearing.

British Transport Police said the items totalled a worth of £35. Skinner stole the items on the morning of 17th October and was then detained by station staff.

It was when transport police arrived to arrest her that she was recognised as having a previous CBO.

British Transport Police’s Chief Inspector James Mitchell said: “Skinner’s CBO has stringent conditions meaning she isn’t allowed into Manchester Piccadilly unless she has a valid ticket and is intending to travel, and her actions on that day show she very clearly did not.

“Skinner’s flagrant disregard for the order meant the court had no option but to give her a custodial sentence, which is an excellent result for he local officers who are working hard to tackle retail crime alongside many other challenges.”
