The EU Commission’s latest budget proposal has caused considerable unrest in the European Parliament. MEPs particularly criticize the insufficient consideration of regional needs and the potential distortion of the internal market, particularly in the agricultural sector. These concerns were expressed in a letter to EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, signed by the leaders of the largest parties.
The EU Commission plans to increase the multi-year budget to 2 trillion euros, an increase of 700 billion euros compared to the current budget period. This increase is to be achieved by merging several previously separate funds. But it is precisely this measure that is met with criticism as there are fears that individual policy areas could become less important.
The group leaders, who represent a total of 454 of the 720 seats in parliament, are calling for parliament to be more closely involved in planning and adjustments. They emphasize that a secure structural support policy should not be defined by national governments alone. In particular, fair competition in the agricultural sector must be maintained in order to offer farmers equivalent conditions across the EU.
A failure of the budget proposal in parliament could have far-reaching consequences. MEPs fear that an individual approach by member states and unclear budget distributions could lead to a lack of solidarity and fragmentation. A comprehensive revision of the proposal is therefore called for to adequately take into account the interests of all Member States.
