When it comes to supermarket bakeries, Lidl often takes the crown, known for innovative treats such as the Dubai Style Muffin and Sugar Cronut.

But another stalwart is about to give the budget-retailer a run for its money.

Sainsbury’s has just launched a sweet version of everyone’s favourite bread: the Taste the Difference Belgian Dark Chocolate and Fudge Sourdough Bloomer.

Filled with caramel fudge pieces and Belgian dark chocolate chunks, it costs £2.50, and while it’s only been available for a few days, fans are already calling it ‘unreal’.

Snaps of the sweet treat have been doing the rounds on Facebook and Instagram, where Sainsbury’s fans have been left shook.

It’s fair to say that those who haven’t yet tried the bread have been desperate to get their hands on it.

‘Need this in my life yesterday,’ wrote one Instagram user. While another added: ‘Erm gamechanger. Runs to Sainsbury’s.’

Others who’ve been lucky enough to try it have been able to confirm that it’s worth the hype.

‘Had it a few times and must say it’s the best thing ever,’ wrote one satisfied customer.

Another food influencer noted that the treat smelt like ‘a big brownie’ and awarded Sainsbury’s ’20/10′.

It a far cry from those sourdough starters we were all attempting to master not so long ago — but not everyone is impressed.

TikToker @elmint was initially excited to tuck in to the new bakery treat, giving the loaf a strong shot at success by plating up two slices — one toasted, one not.

‘If I was blindfolded I don’t think I would know that it was a chocolate sourdough loaf,’ she revealed to her followers. ‘It honestly just tastes like a normal bit of sourdough.’

Toasted, the Sainsbury’s sourdough definitely had a more indulgent taste, however, it was still rather disappointing.

‘I definitely wouldn’t buy it again,’ she said. ‘You’d probably be better off getting some normal sourdough, toasting it, and then popping some Nutella on it,’ she noted.

Interestingly, some bread-lovers appreciated the fact that the chocolate wasn’t too overwhelming though, saying that the balance between the caramel and Belgian chocolate chunks really worked.

The news comes after M&S launched their own chocolate twist on a bakery classic: a chocolate Pastel de nata.

Costing £1.10, it features a creamy baked egg custard and chocolate filling inside an all-butter cocoa pastry. ‘One of the best products M&S have sold for a long time! Worth £1.10,’ wrote one Facebook user.

As we approach Christmas, M&S is already ramping up its sweet treat offerings, having recently launched their Big Mix chocolates.

The Big Mix from M&S costs £7 for a 650g carton or £12 for a huge 1.2kg tin and features a mix of 10 different sweets in colourful wrappers, suitable for vegetarians.

The selection includes Salted Caramel, Coffee Truffle, Hazelnut in Caramel, Cream Toffee, Milk Crème, Caramel Fudge, Strawberry Crème, Orange Crème, Biscuit in Caramel and a Butterscotch Éclair.

Customers claimed it was ‘better than’ the likes of Quality Street and Roses and the sweets were a ‘real joy’ to eat.
