Food is a fundamental part of Day of the Dead. And it is not only for the deceased, but also for the living, who can enjoy special seasonal dishes and flavors. In fact, several restaurants in Mexico City (CDMX) will organize themed dinners, and here we propose five of them.

Sepia in North Rome
In the vibrant Roma Norte neighborhood (near Avenida Chapultepec), one of its many Porfirian mansions houses the restaurant Sepia Italian Cuisine, with a modern interior that contrasts with the facade. There, from the creations of chef Julián Martínez, the ‘Black Dinner’ was born, a 6-course menu that mixes Mexican ingredients and Italian specialties.

Atypical in Parque La Mexicana
In the heart of Parque La Mexicana (in Santa Fe) stands a contemporary building made of exposed concrete, woody interiors and glass windows: it is Atypicala restaurant with international cuisine and super cocktails instagrameable.
To commemorate the Day of the Dead, chef Claudia de Murga designed the ‘Cena de las Ánimas’ with a 9-course menu that also includes a selection of cocktails inspired by the pre-Hispanic world, such as artisanal chocolate infused with spices, hazelnut liqueur and banana foam, accompanied by a pan de muerte filled with marigold ice cream and candied orange.

Cityzen on Paseo de la Reforma
On the Paseo de la Reforma, on the 38th floor of the Sofitel Mexico City Reforma hotel, the restaurant/bar/rooftop Cityzen It is one of the most impressive panoramic spots in CDMX, as it offers 180° views, as well as Mexican and French fusion dishes and drinks.
To celebrate the Day of the Dead, they will have ‘La Cena Negra’ or ‘Les Âmes du Mexique’, a gastronomic experience that begins with a catrín or catrina makeup in the lobby bar (14th floor) and a 4-course menu with cocktails from Don Julio.

Old Hacienda of Tlalpan
The Tlalpan mayor’s office boasts one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in CDMX, with historic colonial buildings, such as the Antigua Hacienda de Tlalpan, built in 1837. The Day of the Dead experience called ‘Night of Legends’ includes a skull workshop, welcome cocktail and a 4-course menu paired with wines. Their most notable dishes are: duo of corundas (chicken with pumpkin blossom and beans with cheese) and huitlacoche risotto.

Gran Cantina Filomeno in Roma Norte
Surrounded by Porfirian mansions, the Gran Cantina Filomeno, which recreates the atmosphere and food of the cantinas of the early 20th century, will have a special gastronomic experience for the Day of the Dead, which consists of a catrina parade and contest by the Skenika theater company and a 5-course dinner with pairing.
Here you can try the escamol minisope (ant larvae), the white mole with chicken and the capirotada with caviar.
