The Washington Post revealed that a secret report prepared by the Inspector General of the US State Department – days before the ceasefire agreement in Gaza – indicated that the Israeli army may have committed hundreds of human rights violations during its military operations using American-made weapons.
According to the newspaper, the US State Department received about 500 reports – from government agencies, human rights organizations and eyewitnesses – documenting Israel’s use of American weapons in attacks that resulted in the deaths of civilians, including dozens of children.
Although there are internal instructions stipulating that such reports must be investigated within two months, two-thirds of the cases have not yet been addressed, and the ministry is still awaiting responses from the Israeli government.
One of the most prominent examples mentioned in the report is an Israeli air strike that targeted a residential building in Gaza, resulting in the death of more than 90 people, including 25 children. Other reports also documented the targeting of tents and hospitals, including Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir Al-Balah.
According to the Washington Post, the US State Department Inspector General’s report raised doubts about the possibility of holding Israel accountable for its actions in Gaza.
For his part, US State Department Legal Counsel John Ramming-Chappell criticized President Trump’s administration’s disregard for this evidence, considering that this represents unconditional support for the policy of transferring weapons to the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court on charges of committing war crimes in Gaza.
For his part, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller expressed “deep concern” about the high number of civilian casualties, calling on Israel to provide a full explanation.
But the Washington Post also quoted American officials as saying that reviewing the accusations against Israeli military units in Gaza will take years.
This report comes at a time when pressure is increasing within the US Congress to restrict military aid to Israel, amid increasing calls for accountability and transparency regarding the use of US weapons in international conflicts.
Since October 7, 2023, Israel – with absolute American support – has committed genocide in the Gaza Strip, leaving more than 68,000 martyrs and 170,000 injured, most of them women and children, and thousands missing under the rubble.
Despite the ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), the occupying state committed many violations and continues to impose a strict siege on Gaza.
