Mexico City, October 30 (However).- The Rector of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), Leonardo Lomelimade a call yesterday to resume the classes in person on all campuses and not allow virtual threats spread fear in the university community.
“Let us not allow virtual threats to sow fear in our faculties and schools. Let us responsibly address the risks, review our action protocols and security systems, and return to face-to-face activities where they are still suspended, with the conviction that the university community, united and through dialogue, can solve its problems,” he expressed.
In a speech delivered within the framework of the ceremony of the National University Award and the National University Distinction for Young Academics 2025, held at the Juan Ruiz de Alarcón Theater, Lomelí assured that the National University “does not allow itself to be defeated by false threats or external pressures, and above all, it does not stop.”
“Both the world and our country face unprecedented challenges. In face-to-face and virtual environments, violence, misinformation and ideological polarization constantly challenge educational centers and impact university life,” he said.
The statement occurs after weeks of tension due to the strikes and threats that have occurred at various campuses of the institution, as well as the recent scandal following the murder of a Cruz Azul Club fan allegedly committed by UNAM Surveillance personnel last Saturday.
“Throughout its history, the university has faced difficult situations from which it has emerged stronger through its ability to adapt to changes and the reform of its structures and procedures to better respond to the needs of its community and the country,” he stated.
The rector also highlighted that this year UNAM awarded 33 university students for their work in research, generation and dissemination of knowledge. He stated that his actions were focused on building a future with fewer injustices and greater social mobility.
“Let us not allow anyone to deprive us of the spaces that the people of Mexico have entrusted to their university to carry out their primary functions. Teaching, research and the dissemination of culture,” he concluded.
