The United States is preparing to bomb military installations in Venezuela at any time, in an escalation of conflict against the regime of Nicolás Maduro.
The news was released this Friday, October 31, by the North American newspapers Miami Herald and The Wall Street Journal, which cite sources close to President Donald Trump’s government.
According to the Miami daily, air strikes could occur “in a matter of days or even hours”, while the New York newspaper clarified that “the president has not yet made a final decision regarding ordering bombings on land”.
The US offensive aims to pressure the Venezuelan president to abandon power, according to those responsible cited by the two publications, who also claim that the attack aims to dismantle the Los Soles Cartel and drug trafficking networks in Venezuela.
“Potential targets under consideration include military-controlled ports and airports allegedly used to traffic drugs, including naval installations and airstrips, according to one of those responsible.”indicou The Wall Street Journal.
For its part, the Miami Herald cited a source stating that Maduro’s time “is running out”, since now “there is more than one general willing to capture and hand him over”, although the sources declined to reveal whether the Venezuelan leader will be one of the targets of the bombings.
On Tuesday, Donald Trump reiterated that he will prevent drugs from entering the United States “by land”, after almost two months of bombings of 15 speedboats in the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, which, since September 1st, have resulted in 61 deaths and three survivors.
“We are finally fighting a war against the cartels. We are fighting a war like you have never seen before, and we are going to win this battle. We are already winning it at sea”, declared Trump, in a speech to US troops in Japan.
Information about land bombings emerged on the same day that the UN accused the US Government of “violating international law” with its attacks on vessels at sea, stating that the people on board were victims of “extrajudicial executions”.
“These attacks, and their growing human cost, are unacceptable. The United States must put an end to them”, demanded the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk.
