AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – The Augusta-Richmond County Public Library System released a statement Friday expressing what it calls “serious concerns” over the proposed Fiscal Year Budget for 2026, which includes a potential reduction in funds.
According to the library system, the proposed budget would decrease funds by 10 percent, a $288,590 reduction from the previous allocation, giving the library an awarded amount at $2,598,250. It would place the it below the amount approved in approved 2022.
The library system said the decrease would be a threat for library services for residents in the area.
“If the proposed budget is approved by the Augusta-Richmond County Commission, ARCPLS will be forced to implement the following cost-saving measures:
- Reduced operating hours systemwide
- Elimination of all part-time positions
- Closure of one to two branch libraries
- Significant reduction in programs and community services.”
The library is asking the community to voice their support for the libraries by contacting commissioners ahead of the upcoming budget vote.
“Libraries are more than just buildings with books—they are vital community centers that connect people to information, opportunity, and each other,” said Emanuel Sinclair Mitchell, representing the Augusta-Richmond County Public Library System. “This proposed cut will severely limit our ability to meet the needs of our residents and continue the programs that enrich lives every day.”
