‘A cult’: Floyd Shivambu fires dig at former employers EFF and ANC

Former Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) deputy president Floyd Shivambu said he does not regret leaving the party and maintains that this was his best decision ever.

Shivambu held a media briefing on Thursday, where he confirmed that he will embark on a nationwide consultation process on whether he, together with other stakeholders, should form a political party that will contest in the 2026 local government elections.

FLOYD SHIVAMBU TAKES A SWIPE AT EFF AND ANC

During the briefing, Shivambu dumped the EFF and joined the Jacob Zuma-led uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party in August 2024 told journalists that after he was fired as the party’s secretary-general a number of people approached him regarding his future in politics.

Shivambu said the individuals including some from the MK Party, EFF and ANC insisted that he should not re-join the ANC which he said is directionless and the EFF which he likened to a cult.

“Leaving the EFF is the best decision I’ve ever made in my political life…there was no way you could dedicate your intellectual muscles and work. In practice, you realise that this thing which we said we’re standing for is not principled. Check the conduct of the EFF in government and what gets to legitimate such. That was the best decision ever,” he said.

‘JULIUS MALEMA ISN’T WORTHY OF BEING PRESIDENT OF SOUTH AFRICA’

Further, Floyd Shivambu revealed that together with the party’s former spokesperson and member of Parliament, Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, and others were unanimous in that Julius Malema can never lead the country as president.

“We reached the same conclusion that we are not being fair to society if we say this comrade can lead this country. All of us agreed, with the people who are leading the EFF now. That is the reality of the situation. The people who are leading the EFF now, all of us were unanimous, and then the issue was what do we do?,” he said.

Regarding whether or not he was sponsored to destabilise the EFF, Shivambu said if he wanted to destabilise the party he could’ve started a faction while he was there and caused destruction.

“The decision was let me not destabilise the EFF and leave,” he added.
