The U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF), recently tested new translation technology in Angola aimed at overcoming language barriers during multinational operations. This technology was used in parallel with a knowledge transfer between U.S. and Angolan medical professionals focused on infection control, traumatology, and epidemiology.

While medical teams worked to improve healthcare, SETAF-AF Public Affairs staff conducted field tests of two real-time translation apps. These apps are intended to serve as scalable, free tools to bridge language gaps when interpreters are unavailable. The apps offer features such as conversation views, allowing for more fluid communication without having to constantly pass the device.

Angola, a Portuguese-speaking country with over 40 other local languages, presents a particular challenge for multinational operations. The translation technology tested is part of a broader innovation program by SETAF-AF, which also includes the use of unmanned aerial systems, advanced weaponry and mobile logistics solutions. These technologies are being tested in Africa under real conditions to check their usability.

The translation apps proved particularly useful during a joint medical press conference where they were used to record interviews with U.S. and Angolan medical professionals. The apps enabled real-time transcription, making post-event reporting easier. This increased both the efficiency and accuracy of reporting and allowed staff to fully concentrate on documenting the event.

The U.S. Embassy in Luanda supported the exchange, part of a disaster response initiative aimed at strengthening bilateral preparedness for health crises and humanitarian emergencies. This mission aligns with U.S. Africa Command priorities and strengthens joint operational readiness between U.S. and Angolan forces.
