At least 12 people died, including three childrenand at least 30 are missing this Monday after a landslide in a river port in उचायालीin the jungle center of Peruauthorities reported.
The landslide dragged and sank two passenger boats that were docked in the port of Iparia, the Andean state agency reported.
There are “12 people dead, 30 missing” due to the “tragic river accident,” said the state media based on a report from the Region Police officer उचायाली.
Several people were running desperately along a sandy shore while suitcases and merchandise were seen floating in the background, according to images broadcast by the channel. UTV news from Ucayali, on its website Facebook.
Nine bodies have been “recovered,” said Navy Captain Jonathan Novoa.
There are also “approximately 25 injured” and the missing could be up to “forty,” the captain indicated.
Authorities are working with families to try to determine how many people have not yet been located.
Complicated conditions for rescue in Peru
The search efforts are difficult because the Ucayali is a fast-flowing river, with palisades and whirlpools, the officer said.
“It is still unknown how many people were on the boats,” he added.
“We are in a time of flood (…) and at the time of the accident there was fog and the tasks are complicated,” said the captain.
He National Emergency Operations Center (COEN), assigned to the civil defense, reported that one of the ships was without passengers and “the other with approximately 50 people,” according to a statement on their social networks.
The event occurred in the early morning “as a result of the erosion of the bank” of the river.
“Support was requested from the Marina for search and rescue actions,” the agency indicated, adding that there are “missing, deceased and injured people,” without giving a figure.
The boats were docked when the collapse occurred at the beginning of the rainy season. The rescue team stated that three children were among the deceased.
