WIESBADEN / LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – From March 2026, Schufa will give consumers free access to simplified credit scores. This measure aims to increase transparency and help consumers better understand their creditworthiness. The introduction of a new calculation model promises to reduce the complexity of credit scoring and provide greater insight for both consumers and banks.

Schufa, Germany’s leading credit agency for credit ratings, is planning a significant step towards transparency from March 2026. For the first time, consumers will be able to access simplified credit scores free of charge, allowing them to better understand their creditworthiness. This initiative comes after years of criticism of Schufa’s lack of transparency and is seen as a milestone in consumer friendliness.
In order to gain access to the new data, interested parties must first register for a Schufa account. This process requires placement on a waitlist followed by gradual activation. Users can currently be identified using their ID card with an online ID function, although postal verification is planned for the future.
Schufa’s new calculation model promises to be understandable even without in-depth mathematical knowledge. In the future, consumers will be able to understand how the score is made up. Factors such as the duration of account use or existing negative entries are included in the points system from 100 to 999. The higher the points, the better the credit rating.
This transparency offensive is intended to provide more insight not only to consumers, but also to banks, mail order companies and other service providers. These players use Schufa information to better assess their customers’ payment behavior and to calculate risks when concluding contracts.
Despite the opening, the concern remains that complete transparency poses a risk of manipulation. Schufa has previously used this argument to justify its reluctance. The new transparency offensive is accompanied by technical innovations: Access to the Schufa account is via a web application that will be available on PCs, tablets and smartphones. An app expansion is also planned to further increase consumer convenience.
