The tears were not contained. In front of the altar raised in memory of the 24 victims of the fire in Waldo’s Hermosillo, which occurred a month ago, an older man arrived accompanied by two musicians, took a breath and let his grief guide him.
The first chords of The Tomb Will Be the Final, by Los Invasores de Nuevo León, broke the silence of the afternoon. The passers-by looked up, surprised by that melody that seemed to spring from the very heart of the tragedy. Two men were singing in chorus, scratching an old guitar: “Our love is as great… as there will never be…”, while one of them completely broke down.
At the end of the three mourning songs, the man bent down and reached for the photograph of Jesús Ana María Cortés Ríos, one of the people who died on November 1. He held her to his chest as if he could still hold her. Her silent, but devastating cry wrinkled the souls of those who watched. On that altar, tragedy lives on; It is not a memory: it is an open wound.
A month has passed, but in the heart of Hermosillo time seems stopped. The altar, in front of what remains of the store, has become a point of obligatory reflection. Many whisper that they knew one of the victims, others leave flowers, candles and messages.
On an economic level, the area has not managed to rise. According to the Union of Central Merchants, sales plummeted 50%, which represents losses of more than 67.5 million pesos. The smallest stores have been the hardest hit. Rubén López Peralta, president of the union, indicates that they will take legal action against Waldo’s and against whoever is responsible, pending the results of the Prosecutor’s Office.
Meanwhile, the investigation progresses with 553 actions carried out, 150 expert opinions, 148 interviews and 198 requests to institutions. With no arrests made so far, the demand for justice grows. Hermosillo smoke from the tragedy is still breathing, with candles lit and families clinging to the memories of those who died.
