Pedro López recognizes the evolution of the LigaMX Femenil as progress so that the senior team has more elements to think about qualifying for the World Cup in Brazil.
Liga MX Femenil has a future
Just hours before finishing its 2025 activity, with a friendly against Costa Rica, the Women’s National Team accepts the challenge of being the team to beat at the start of the Concacaf qualifiers, with a preliminary in which the US and Canada do not participate due to better FIFA ranking, but with Pedro López convinced that the team does not have a “soccer ceiling” for the future.

Days after the historic 14-0 win against San Vicente, López assured that they see 2026 as a special year due to the qualifiers that will take place towards the 2027 World Cup in Brazil, focused only on what concerns them as a group.
“We are trying to carry out the best possible preparation with the greatest respect for all rivals. We understand that there will be different games, levels and contexts in the classification and each day is a test to see how far we can go,” explained the Spaniard.
Victories counted
With 35 of 49 victories at the head of the Mexican women’s team, López assured that the fact that Mexico today has had a professional league for eight years has served to make the country a benchmark in the region after the two North American countries with the greatest experience in the category. “Our players today represent clubs with a large social mass behind them and that helps us ensure that they perform in a demanding context, as we will see in a qualifier in the coming months.”
From the field view, Rebeca Bernal and Jacqueline Ovalle affirm that the country is on the right path towards a presence in a Women’s World Cup, which has not happened since the 2015 edition in Canada. “The group has gone from less to more and I think we have improved in different game situations,” explained captain Bernal.
Although the coaching staff considers 2025 and Mexico’s recent participation in youth events such as the U-17 and the third place achieved in Morocco as positive, Pedro López rejected that it is contemplated in the short term to integrate any child player into the major process, since he considers that the scenario and responsibility of qualifying for the World Cup must be faced by more experienced players.
“We must give them opportunities in contexts in which it is really a demanding stimulus for them to grow. That is why this year the U-23 was created, to give more contact to those who exceed the U-20 but are not yet in the senior group,” added the Iberian, who prefers to have a team already with experience towards the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in the senior team.
