Netflix Is About to Lose One of the Most Popular Franchises in History

On Christmas Day, Netflix is bidding adieu to one of cinema’s most popular and enduring action franchises.

On Dec. 25, the first four installments of Michael Bay’s Transformers franchise will depart from the streaming service after a hugely successful run throughout this year. All installments of the Shia LaBeouf-led trilogy—Transformers (2007), Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009), and Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011)—are departing Netflix alongside the fourth, Mark Wahlberg-starring installment, Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014).

Some Transformers Installments Will Remain Available

But, notably, not all Transformers content will be departing Netflix on Christmas Day. While you’ll have to crunch if you hope to watch the initial four installments before they go, you’ll have time in the New Year to catch up with Transformers: The Last Knight (2017) and the anime trilogy Transformers: War for Cybertron (2020).

The Transformers franchise has grossed a staggering $5.4 billion worldwide. The series kicked off in 1986 with the awkwardly-titled The Transformers: The Movie, but that grossed less than $6 million. It began in earnest with Bay’s 2007 action hit, which grossed $708 million globally. Dark of the Moon is the series’ highest-grossing title, taking $1.12 billion, though Age of Extinction is close behind with $1.10 billion. Bay left the series after The Last Knight grossed a relatively paltry $602 million, though the franchise continued with Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (2023) and the animated Transformers One (2024).

Transformers is streaming on Netflix now.
