Scarlett Johansson revealed that her husband, SNL’s Colin Jost, thought their romance was a non-starter after her “weird” behavior on their first date.
Jost’s Directness Caught Johansson Off Guard
Johansson unveiled the previously untold story while co-hosting the Dec. 1 episode of Today with Jenna and Friends. Jost asked Johansson out on their first date in 2017, but his direct approach caught her off guard. “My first date with Colin, honestly, nobody ever really asked me out before,” Johansson explained. “I’m telling you. People say that, but it’s true. I was a serial monogamist, and I just never got the traditional, ‘Hey, would you like to have dinner sometime?’
“We went to an Italian restaurant in the East Village. It was a lovely date,” continued the Jurassic World Rebirth star. “We had dinner at 8 p.m. or whatever, and then afterwards, he was like, ‘I’m meeting friends, let’s go grab a drink.’ And I hadn’t dated basically ever, and so I was like, ‘I have to go now. I need to leave,’ she laughed.
Johansson added that her behavior misled even her babysitter, who was likewise convinced the date had gone poorly. “I got home to relieve my babysitter, and it was like 9:36, and she was like, ‘Why are you home?!’” Johansson recalled. “I was like, ‘I went on this date, and it was…’ I just felt so flustered.”

‘I Totally Thought That Was It’
Much to Jost’s surprise, Johansson agreed to future dates. The couple married in 2020, and Johansson gave birth to their son the following year. “Later on, he was like, ‘I totally thought that was it,’” Johansson said of their first date. “’You were acting so weird,’” she recalled Jost saying. “I panicked. I don’t know.”
Jost and Johansson shared the SNL stage when she hosted the 50th season finale in May, another charge in a busy year for the star. In addition to the box office success of Rebirth, Johansson released her directorial debut, Eleanor the Great, in September. Last week, it was announced that she’ll lead Mike Flanagan’s new Exorcist movie.
