HALIFAX / LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – A new study from Dalhousie University in Canada has identified a critical turning point in the aging process. After around age 75, the body’s ability to recover from illness and injury decreases dramatically. This leads to an increased risk of frailty and mortality.

Human aging is not linear, but has critical turning points, as a recent study from Dalhousie University in Canada shows. Researchers have found that after about age 75, the body’s ability to recover from injury or illness decreases significantly. This decrease in resilience is associated with an increased risk of death.
The study views aging as a balance between damage and repair. Once this balance is disrupted, the body enters a state of frailty. These findings could be important for researchers and clinicians to better plan and understand healthcare for older people.
Interestingly, the study also shows that the human body goes through periods of accelerated aging throughout life. For example, there is a point at age 50 where the aging of the organs accelerates. These findings are based on data from over 12,000 people studied as part of the University of Michigan Health and Retirement Study and the English Longitudinal Study of Aging.
Researchers used the Frailty Index to quantify participants’ health. This index includes over 30 attributes, including chronic diseases and cardiovascular conditions. The results show that both health setbacks and recovery time increase with age until a critical point is reached where the rate of recovery can no longer keep up with the rate of health setbacks.
These findings could help develop strategies aimed at improving patient health before reaching this critical point. Early interventions to reduce stressors could be medically beneficial. The study also shows how mathematics can be applied to biology in new ways to predict long-term health outcomes and delay the onset of frailty.
