The US electric car manufacturer Tesla has announced that it will increase the salaries of its employees at the Gigafactory in Grünheide by four percent. This adjustment applies retroactively from December 1st and, according to Tesla, was decided without union influence. Human resources manager Erik Demmler emphasized that this measure was part of the promise to regularly review salaries.
However, the IG Metall union, which has long been campaigning for the introduction of a collective agreement at Tesla, is dissatisfied. Jan Otto, district manager of IG Metall for Berlin, Brandenburg and Saxony, explained that although the wage increase was justified and necessary, pay at Tesla still lagged well behind the usual level in the German auto industry.
Tesla argues that the starting annual salary for production employees after the increase is around 6,000 euros above the collectively agreed annual salary for Berlin, Brandenburg and Saxony. This corresponds to an increase of 14.5 percent compared to the standard wage. However, IG Metall considers this comparison to be misleading because Tesla uses the lowest pay group in the collective agreement, which is often not awarded in automobile factories.
The discussion about salaries at Tesla highlights the tensions between the company and the union. While Tesla is resisting a collective agreement, IG Metall continues to call for its introduction in order to establish more comprehensive regulations, such as the payment of a Christmas bonus.
