STUTTGART / LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – Artificial intelligence is supposed to make our lives easier, but when it comes to nutrition for pregnant women, a different side emerges. Scientists at the University of Hohenheim examined the nutritional recommendations of AI tools such as ChatGPT and Gemini and found significant deficiencies. These could have potentially dangerous consequences for mother and child.

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in health advice promises to make our lives not only easier, but also healthier. But a current study by the University of Hohenheim shows that AI-supported nutritional tips for pregnant women can have significant deficiencies. The researchers used the AI tools ChatGPT and Gemini to create a total of 20 nutrition plans and compared them with the scientifically based recommendations of the Healthy into Life Network and the German Nutrition Society (DGE).
The results of the study were sobering. While both AI tools correctly warned about alcohol and raw animal products, crucial information about other critical foods was missing. In all the plans tested, ChatGPT forgot to mention packaged salads, which can be a breeding ground for germs such as E. coli or listeria due to the humid climate in the packaging. Gemini, on the other hand, omitted the warning about raw sprouts, which can also contain dangerous bacteria.
There were also significant deficits in the nutrient composition. None of the plans created by the AI tools reached the DGE reference values for carbohydrates, vitamin D, fluoride and iodine. What was particularly problematic was that Gemini had difficulty getting enough folic acid and iron, even though these nutrients are particularly important during pregnancy.
The Federal Center for Nutrition (BZfE) draws a clear conclusion: Chatbots cannot currently provide comprehensive personal advice to pregnant women. The results of AI tools are often incomplete and differ from official recommendations. Nutrition experts therefore advise pregnant women not to rely solely on chatbots, but rather to seek advice from nutrition experts or to use the websites of the Healthy into Life network and the DGE.
