Israel’s State Comptroller, Matanyahu Engelman, warned that its security and vital facilities are not protected from missiles and drones, criticizing the Israeli “security establishment” because it “did not pay attention to fortifying those facilities.”
Haaretz newspaper quoted a report addressed by Engelman to the Israeli Ministry of Defense, saying, “The security establishment has not paid attention to fortifying vital installations against missiles, despite the increasing threats and review reports published in recent years.”
He stated in his report that the “shortcomings” that he had previously warned about “were not corrected even after the outbreak of the “War of the Iron Swords,” referring to the Israeli war of annihilation on the Gaza Strip.
According to Engelman, “The Ministry of Defense, the Army, and the National Security Council did not specify the vital facilities that should be fortified, nor did they prepare plans to fortify them, even after launching about 26,000 missiles, shells, and drones toward Israel during the war.”
In another part of his report, Engelman said, “The Israeli government does not supervise institutes and laboratories concerned with biological weapons research,” expressing his fear that “the information contained therein may leak into the hands of terrorist groups.”
The Israeli official pointed out that “there are scenarios in the security establishment for the possibility of a bioterrorist attack against Israel,” but he said that “there is no organized mechanism for exchanging information between the concerned authorities, and the Ministry of Health has not taken any steps to regulate this issue since 2008.”
According to the report, the State Comptroller’s Office examined 43 institutions engaged in biological weapons research, and concluded that the Ministry of Health does not supervise the work rules in laboratories and institutes that maintain these dangerous materials.
The report stated that there are problems in laboratories related to security procedures, as well as gaps in preparing emergency plans.
It is noteworthy that the Office of the State Comptroller is responsible for monitoring the work of state agencies and bodies, and is elected for a period of 7 years by a secret vote in the Knesset.
