Marcus Rashford’s future with Barcelona is shrouded in uncertainty as the possibility of him returning to Manchester United at the end of the season increases.

The departure of the on-loan Manchester United player is considered the most likely scenario, while the Catalan club has the option to buy the striker.

But Rashford may find himself in a position that forces him to make a surprise return to Manchester United next summer.

Uncertain future

The striker completed a dream move to La Liga giants Barcelona during the transfer window, and the initial loan deal includes a $34 million option to become a permanent Barca player.

But Rashford’s future is already shrouded in doubt months after his departure from Old Trafford, and The Athletic reported that the most likely scenario is for Rashford to leave Barcelona when his loan contract expires.

He pointed out that this would lead to the English player being forced to either return to the “Red Devils” or find another place, or win the trust of coach Ruben Amorim.

This will be a devastating blow for Rashford, as he has previously publicly confirmed his desire to remain at Barcelona after his temporary loan period ends.

The Old Trafford academy graduate has made a positive start to the season, scoring six goals and providing a further nine assists in 18 appearances.

But coach Hansi Flick still considers him a non-starter in Barcelona. This is what prompted the Spanish League champions to seriously consider ignoring the option to buy Rashford. Alternatively, Barcelona may enter the transfer market in search of a replacement before next season.

Rashford, 28, spent the second half of last season on loan with Aston Villa after being frozen out by Amorim.

But coach Unai Emery chose not to take advantage of the opportunity to retain him for $52.81 million. This led to Rashford returning to Manchester United until Barcelona’s offer came.

Rashford made 426 appearances for his boyhood club, scoring 138 goals, before being released by Amorim.
