The Biggest MCU Movie Is Coming Back to Theaters

The biggest movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe—and the second-highest grossing movie of all time—is heading back to theaters. Before fans watch the heroes of the MCU battle Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom in 2026’s Avengers: Doomsday, they’ll get a chance to rewatch Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man battle Thanos in Avengers: Endgame

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Endgame, originally released in 2019, would be in theaters again starting on September 25, 2026. It’s unclear how long this theatrical run will last, but it will give fans a chance to watch the film on the big screen before Doomsday closes out the year on December 18.

Although there have been several movies in the MCU between Endgame and Doomsday, it makes sense that Endgame is returning to theaters ahead of the upcoming Avengers film. For starters, there hasn’t been a proper Avengers movie since 2019. Doomsday also marks the return of Downey, who kicked off the whole MCU with 2008’s Iron Man, to the franchise. Incase you forgot, Tony Stark died at the end of Endgame and hasn’t been seen since. In Doomsday, he’ll be playing a different character, the Fantastic Four’s archenemy Doctor Doom. How, exactly, this will work remains to be seen. Additionally, Joe and Anthony Russo, the brothers who directed many of the biggest MCU movies including Endgame, are returning to helm Doomsday, too.

There Won’t Be a Lot of MCU Movies in Theaters Next Year

The re-release of Avengers: Endgame in theaters ups the number of MCU movies that’ll be playing on the big screen. Spider-Man: Brand New Day will bring back Tom Holland’s web-slinger on July 31, 2026. Then there’s the Endgame re-release before Avengers: Doomsday on December 18, 2026. After that, barring any more revival screenings of old MCU movies, there won’t be another film installment hitting theaters until Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17, 2027.

In 2025 there were three new MCU movies in theaters, Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts*, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. In 2024 there was only one, Deadpool & Wolverine

Armor Wars, Black Panther 3, the very troubled Blade movie, a Shang-Chi sequel, and an X-men film are all reportedly in the works but none of these future MCU movies have release dates yet. So, might as well enjoy Endgame, the high point of the whole franchise, when it’s briefly back in theaters.
