TMPD cracks down on drunk driving over festive season

The Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) says it has intensified its crackdown on drunk driving, speeding and reckless behaviour during the festive season.

The department said the operation is a response to increased road fatalities linked to speeding, drunk driving and pedestrians illegally walking on highways.

Spokesperson Isaac Mahamba said the department will deploy more officers, implement roadblocks and step up crime-prevention operations to ensure safety on the roads.

ZERO TOLERANCE ON DRUNK DRIVING

“There will be more boots on the ground conducting regular roadblocks, police visibility and crime prevention. We are determined to eliminate these dangerous habits that threaten and have the possibility of claiming the lives of innocent people,” said Mahamba on Saturday.

TMPD also issued a warning to motorists who ignore traffic laws, exceed speed limits or drive under the influence, as well as pedestrians found on highways.

TMPD chief, Commissioner YCR Faro, urged officers to enforce the National Road Traffic Act without leniency. “It is essential to correct your behaviour while still having an option, or we will take action to correct it for you,” said Mahamba.
