A horror–comedy film lauded as ‘wickedly funny’ and ‘phenomenal’ is streaming now on Amazon Prime Video.
Starring Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Abigail Breslin, and Emma Stone, Zombieland follows four survivors of a zombie apocalypse – Tallahassee (Harrelson), Columbus (Eisenberg), Wichita (Stone), and Little Rock (Breslin).
They are thrown together by a chance meeting in the zombie-infested wasteland of America and embark on a cross-country road trip to find a sanctuary free from the virus that has ravaged the world.
Following its premiere at Fantastic Fest in 2009, Zombieland was a huge hit, becoming the 10th highest-grossing zombie film ever in the US until the release of World War Z in 2013.
It was followed by a sequel, Zombieland: Double Tap, in 2019, which saw Tallahassee, Columbus, and Wichita travel to the White House in search of Little Rock when she leaves the safe community they have found.
Zombieland holds an impressive 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with the critics’ consensus reading: ‘Wickedly funny and featuring plenty of gore, Zombieland is proof that the zombie subgenre is far from dead.’
In Metro’s own three-star review, Larushka Ivan-Zadeh wrote: ‘The narrative suffers from a recurrent limp but there are memorable high notes, namely a genius cameo by the ever marvellous Bill Murray as himself.’
Shockya.com said: ‘Packed with the genre’s standard overdose of blood and guts. Add in a charming band of misfits and you get something thrilling, hilarious and sweet, all at the same time.’
Many compared it to Shaun Pegg and Nick Frost’s zom-rom-com Shaun of the Dead, with the Chicago Reader writing: ‘Scattershot but sharp, this postapocalyptic road comedy gives Shaun of the Dead a run for its money.’
The Independent echoed the same sentiments: ‘A zombie comedy funnier than Shaun of the Dead? They said it couldn’t be done, but here it is.’
MovieFreak.com commented there were ‘moments of sheer inventive genius that left me amazed’, while the Guardian said it was ‘a very ridiculous film which is also a treat.’

Empire gushed: ‘Very funny, often thrilling and full of neat little touches that should make it entirely rewatchable, Zombieland sees Fleischer join the ranks of directors – Romero, Wright, Raimi, Snyder – whose first films aren’t just zombie films, but great films.’
Meanwhile, Detroit News thought: ‘It’s a black-blood-spitting mugging of a movie, but it’s also relentlessly funny and innovative, the sort of film that makes you writhe and laugh at the same time.’
Last month, Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer addressed rumours of a third film in the franchise.
Speaking to Deadline, he said: ‘I’m hoping that we’ll do a Zombieland 3 in 2029. We’re starting to talk about that because [the first] one was 2009, and then we did the second one in 2019, and we kind of left that one all saying, “We’ll see you in 10 years.”
‘That’s coming up now, and so we’re starting to figure that out, so I’m hoping that’ll come together. Then, I’ve got a few things that are raring to go, so we’ll see which one comes first.’
