Cricket Namibia has appointed former South Africa international and ICC Cricket World Cup-winning coach Gary Kirsten as consultant to the men’s national team as they prepare for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, to be hosted in India and Sri Lanka in February-March next year.
Kirsten will work closely with Craig Williams, the former Namibian international who currently serves as head coach of the men’s national side.
‘Impressed by the country’s ambition’
In a statement released by Cricket Namibia, Kirsten said he was impressed by the country’s ambition and commitment to building a world-class cricket system.
“It is indeed a privilege to work with Cricket Namibia. I have been thoroughly impressed with the dedication and determination to create a high-performance cricket environment,” Kirsten said.
“Their new state-of-the-art cricket stadium is a testament to their commitment to making sure their national teams are competing with the best cricket countries in the world. Their senior men’s national team is performing well, and I look forward to adding value to their preparation for the T20 World Cup in February next year.”
Namibia have emerged as one of the most promising smaller cricketing nations in T20 cricket.
The Eagles have qualified for the last three consecutive T20 World Cups – in 2021, 2022 and 2024 – and remain in contention for the upcoming 2026 edition.
They will also be co-hosts of the 2027 ODI World Cup alongside South Africa and Zimbabwe.
Turned to coaching after retirement
Cricket Namibia said Gary Kirsten’s appointment underscores its focus on strengthening its high-performance structures.
“His blend of international playing experience, coaching success, and passion for player development brings valuable insight and added depth to the Eagles set-up,” the board said.
Kirsten, one of South Africa’s finest batsmen during his career from 1993 to 2004, transitioned to coaching after retirement.
He played a pivotal role in founding a cricket academy in Cape Town before taking on various coaching roles within South Africa’s structures.
In 2007, he became head coach of India, guiding them to the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup title.
He later coached South Africa’s national team and has held coaching roles across global T20 leagues.
His most recent international tenure was a short-lived stint as Pakistan men’s head coach in 2024.
Gary Kirsten’s arrival is expected to bolster Namibia’s preparation as they aim to continue their upward trajectory on the global stage.
