- The drama is based on Philippa Gregory’s novels and stars Rebecca Ferguson
- Set during the Wars of the Roses, it explores intrigue among England’s queens
Channel 4 promises seduction, betrayal and murder in equal measure with their latest period drama addition to the free streaming service.
Based on the smash hit series of historical novels from Philippa Gregory, all 10 episodes of The White Queen are awaiting your viewing pleasure.
Starring Rebecca Ferguson as the queen in question, the soapy period drama focuses on the early Tudor times as the Wars of the Roses ravages England.
The one-season drama originally aired on the BBC in 2013, before it was picked up by Starz in the US to continue the story of Gregory’s The Cousins’ War novels with The White Princess, starring Jodie Comer, and The Spanish Princess.
This BBC adaptation promises a peek behind the curtain at the three-way power struggle between women at the top of society during an incredibly tumultuous period in British society.
The episodes span decades at a time, starting out with King Edward IV, played by Jeremy Irons’ son Max Irons, on the throne and trucking through the 15th century, when he infamously names Richard III as the protector of the little princes – whose real-life fate remains a mystery to this day.
The official Channel 4 synopsis bills the show, which currently holds an 80% score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, as a ‘riveting’ look at the time, in which we ‘follow the fascinating lives of England’s queens’.
The show scored an IMDb rating of 7.7 out of 10, with a raft of rave reviews from viewers, including Patrick James, who noted the show improved with each new episode.
‘The very first episode was rather underwhelming, however it was still interesting enough for me to continue to watch. By the third episode I was hooked and the series has continued to deliver,’ Patrick wrote.
What other period dramas can I stream?
- Seaside Hotel. Set as the roaring 1920s come to an end, this small Danish hotel on the North Sea coast is a microcosm of the upstairs-downstairs divide.
- Little Women. This coming-of-age TV adaptation of the classic novel follows four attached-at-the-hip sisters living through the Civil War and its aftermath.
- All the Light We Cannot See. The story of a blind French teenager and a German soldier who attempt to weather the devastation of World War II together
- Harlots. The show is set on the streets and in the brothels of Georgian England in the 1760s, as two warring madams battle it out.
‘The underlying theme, that the women in the Wars of the Roses were just as significant as the men, is an important point, and by focusing on them it does make for excellent drama as their lives are so interesting.’
Pixy had a similar take, writing: ‘I am absolutely obsessed with this show! I love it and cannot get enough!
‘I was iffy about it at first even though I always find historic shows and movies very interesting, then watched it on demand and was in amazement how fantastic it was. I am going to be upset when the season ends.’
