Celebrity Gogglebox is back for a very special episode this evening in support of Stand Up To Cancer.
To mark the one-off instalment, the Channel 4 favourite has added a slew of exciting new pairings to react to this week’s tele.
The additions include an Oscar-winner, newly minted Celebrity Traitors pals and the Doctor himself, with David Tennant the latest star confirmed for Friday night.
The special will see stars reacting to shows including The 1% Club Rollover, the With Love, Meghan Christmas special on Netflix and the Celebrity Catchphrase Christmas special.
As if that wasn’t enough to get into the festive spirit, there will also be clips of the classic film The Sound of Music, as well as the more offbeat choice of James May’s Shed Load of Ideas.
Because the special is in aid of cancer research fundraising, the episode will also feature shorts from the Channel 4 series Stand Up To Cancer: Personal Stories, which spotlights the moving accounts of those affected by cancer.
The episode will slot into a huge Stand Up To Cancer night of live TV on Channel 4, hosted by Clare Balding alongside Adam Hills, Hannah Fry and Vicky Pattison.
So who will be the new faces tuning into the past week’s best TV from the comfort of their own sofas? Read on.
David and Georgia Tennant
The Tennants, who both acted in and met through Doctor Who, will be kicking off this celeb-y line-up.
The couple, who tied the knot in 2011, shared a selfie video on social media to confirm they will be in the hour-long special this evening.
Introducing the legendary Tenth Doctor to his adoring fans, Georgia said: ‘Right, do you want to say what we’re doing?’
David – who played Doctor Who between 2005 and 2010, before returning for the 60th anniversary specials – told fans: ‘We’re doing Gogglebox for Stand Up To Cancer!’
Joe Marler and Nick Mohammed
Joe Marler and Nick Mohammed have seemingly put aside their differences over that Celebrity Traitors finale and are reuniting to watch TV – albeit, sadly, not reruns from the Scottish castle.
The pair shared their own announcement video of the news, in which Marler joked it ‘would be a great opportunity to finally stare [Nick] in the eye and ask why he gleefully betrayed me on national television’.
Proving there’s no real bad blood between these two, he added that he ‘wouldn’t want to do it with anyone else.’ (Not Joe Wilkinson?)
Marler continued: ‘We had a mad old time on The Traitors, and somehow came out of it as actual mates… though I’ll be keeping one eye on him at all times, just in case.’
The Ted Lasso star joked it was the perfect opportunity for Marler to apologise for making himself look so Traitor-like on the show.
‘Joe still texts me about it every 20 minutes, so sitting on a sofa together, unnaturally close, felt like the safest way to rebuild our trust,’ said Mohammed.
Josh Hartnett and Tamsin Egerton
The next ones up in this line-up list are the acting couple Josh Hartnett and Tamsin Egerton.
Josh Hartnett has returned to acting in recent years with Trap and a particularly harrowing Black Mirror episode, having taken a break from the screen to raise his family with Egerton, who starred in noughties favourites including St. Trinian’s and Chalet Girl.
Speaking about his participation in the programme, Hartnett said it was his wife who first introduced him to the hit show years ago during lockdown in 2020.
‘Having the chance to sit with her, share a few laughs and inevitably say something that embarrasses us both, all while helping raise awareness for the worthiest of charities, is the perfect way to kick off the holiday season,’ he said as part of the announcement.
‘I’m incredibly excited to be a part of it, and to support Stand Up To Cancer.’
Kieran Culkin and Jazz Charton
Rounding out the exciting line-up is the ever-witty Succession star Kieran Culkin and his wife Jazz Charton.
Culkin will be best known to TV fans as one of the four inept Roy offspring over on HBO’s late, great prestige saga, as well as for his role in A Real Pain as Jesse Eisenberg’s unruly little brother – in a not entirely dissimilar schtick to his Succession days – for which he won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar.
The announcement was made on Wednesday’s instalment of Good Morning Britain, with Susanna Reid asking: ‘Are they going to make Kieran Culkin watch Home Alone?’
Entertainment reporter Richard Arnold replied: ‘35 years after the fact as well. That’s extraordinary, isn’t it? I’d love to see him watch Succession.’
Gogglebox fans have already shared their delight at the news, with radio host Greg James writing underneath the announcement of Culkin’s casting on Instagram: ‘This is the best booking on anything ever.’
