The film follows 12-year-old Spike as he leaves his safe island home to face the infected chaos of the mainland. In an interview with The Independent, Danny Boyle explained that Jimmy Crystal is actually the grown-up version of the young boy we see in the film’s opening scene. He is the same boy whose family is killed during the initial outbreak. This makes Jimmy much more than just a new character. He represents the return of evil into a world that was starting to heal.
The cult’s look, with shell suits and blonde wigs, is inspired by the real-life figure Jimmy Savile, a once-famous TV personality who later became infamous due to serious scandals. This unsettling reference helps show just how dark and dangerous Jimmy Crystal and his followers really are.
Boyle also revealed the bigger picture behind the trilogy’s themes. The first film focuses on family, while the second, where Jimmy plays a bigger role, explores the nature of evil. So Jimmy’s cult and shocking actions perfectly set the stage for the sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.
