Earlier this month, Hulu officially announced that its hit new showChad Powers will be returning for a second season. While a date for the second season of the show has not yet been announced, it sounds like it might be coming sooner than you’d think.
The show, which stars a-list actor Glen Powell in the leading role, spanned just six episodes in its first season and ended on a rather significant cliffhanger. However, even though the show was just renewed this month, it sounds like the creators don’t want fans to have to wait all that long for more.
What Is ‘Chad Powers?’
Premiering in September in conjunction with the start of college football season, Chad Powers follows Russ Holliday (Glen Powell), a former star college quarterback whose life and career fell apart after an embarrassing mistake that cost his team a national championship, along with a high-profile encounter with a young fan.
After his football future collapses, Holliday devises a scheme to conceal his identity using Hollywood-level prosthetics and makeup in order to quietly join a struggling program in need of a quarterback. Taking on the alias “Chad Powers,” Holliday earns a tryout with the fictional South Georgia Catfish and rapidly turns into a breakout star while keeping his true identity hidden.
The show draws its inspiration from a viral prank video featuring NFL legend Eli Manning, who wore elaborate makeup and tried out for Penn State’s football team as a walk-on under the same name, “Chad Powers.”
Production Faces a Challenge
While the series has been renewed for a second season, there has been no release date set for the second season of Chad Powers, and given the production of the first season, there was at least some reason to think that production on the second season could take quite some time.
For the first season, the show filmed scenes at actual college stadiums during actual college football games. However, since the show was not officially renewed until early December and not set to begin production until January, that won’t exactly be an option this time around, as the 2025 college football regular season has already concluded.
If the show was intent on filming during actual college football games, as it did previously, it would likely have to wait until the 2026 season to film those scenes, which would seemingly push production several months.
New Series Coming Sooner Than You Think
Despite this apparent limitation, co-creator Michael Waldron indicated that they don’t want fans to have to wait all that long for a second season.
“We want to make it on time, on schedule,” Waldron told Decider during a recent interview. “I don’t want this to be one of the shows that people have to wait forever for. It’s only six half-hour episodes. It’s not a long thing. We don’t want to withhold any longer than we have to.”
Given Waldron’s comments, Decider speculated that it sounds like a new season of Chad Powers will come in 2026 – sooner than expected, given the inability to film at live college football games.
A possible remedy to this situation could be filming during college football spring games, which typically take place in April following spring practices. We’ll have to see if that’s something Chad Powers looks to do, or if they look to film the scenes in other ways.
Regardless, it sounds like new episodes will be coming sooner than you think.
