Jake Paul brands Anthony Joshua ‘basic’ and claims superior fight skills ahead of Netflix bout

Jake Paul v Anthony Joshua - Press Conference
Jake Paul doesn’t exactly lack confidence, does he? Which is good for him, considering who his next opponent is. Ahead of Friday’s showdown with Anthony Joshua in Miami, the YouTuber-turned-prizefighter has decided that the best way to sell the fight is to say exactly what he thinks. That includes delivering his harsh verdict straight to Joshua’s face. The bout takes place at The Kaseya Center, with Paul stepping up against the Olympic gold medallist and former two-time heavyweight champion in what is easily the biggest challenge of his boxing career. No one in the sport is pretending that this is much of an even match-up on paper. Paul goes in as a heavy betting underdog (you can get 8/1 on the American), a familiar role that he insists suits him just fine. Sitting opposite Joshua during a recent face-to-face interview hosted on Jake’s huge YouTube channel to promote the fight, Paul leaned into the narrative rather than pushing back against it. He framed the odds as fuel, not fear, painting himself as someone who has always had to scrap for credibility since gloving up. (Picture: Getty Images)

‘I’ve been the underdog my whole life. I’ve had to fight for everything that I’ve gotten. Earned my position all the time. I’ve honestly had some of my best performances coming in as an underdog. And I don’t really look at the betting lines and all “who’s this favourite, who’s that”, because to me none of that matters. I know what I’m capable of and the work that I’ve put in,’ Paul said. While Jake Paul is embracing his outsider status, Joshua is making changes of his own. The 6’6″ heavyweight has cut weight for this fight, something he has never done before in his professional career. It is a notable shift for a boxer whose reputation has long been built on size and power. Paul seized on this factor during the face-off and wasted no time questioning whether it was a smart move for the Watford-born fighter. (Picture: Getty Images)

‘I don’t agree with the decision on his behalf,’ he said. ‘He’s taking away his biggest thing against me, which is his power. And we’ve seen him a little bit lighter and there’s not as much thump on the punches, and I think the best thing he could have had is that extra oomph in those punches.’ (Picture: Getty Images)

For Paul, the scales are a sideshow. He argues that weight won’t decide the outcome of the Netflix-screened bout – skills will. This is where the trash talk turned a little sharp. Paul acknowledged how wild his claim sounds, then doubled down anyway. In his view, Joshua’s success has been built on physical advantages rather than technical brilliance, a take he delivered to a smirk from Friday night’s opponent. (Picture: Getty Images)

Mike Tyson v Jake Paul - Weigh-in
Paul said: ‘But it’s his game plan, whatever he wants. But to me, the weight doesn’t matter. The weight’s not going to make a difference. It’s going to be the skills that win fight, and I believe my skills are better than his. Which is a crazy thing to say but he’s a very basic fighter. He’s gotten where he’s at because of the size and because of the power.’ (Picture: Getty Images)

Paul even pointed to Joshua’s recent past for evidence, referencing the defeats to Oleksandr Usyk. He suggested that when raw power is neutralised, Joshua struggles to adapt. Paul said: ‘The skills are what’s going to win this fight. You saw that when Usyk fought him. I believe it’s going to be very similar to that’, making it clear exactly how he sees the contest playing out. Even if it’s a point of view that very few pugilism fans share. (Picture: Getty Images)
That doesn’t mean that Paul is dismissing Joshua’s danger, though. He knows the risk and admits it openly. ‘He’s been doing it for a long time. He’s great, and if you get caught with that one punch, of course he’s going to defeat you,’ Paul said, before explaining why he thinks he can avoid that very fate… (Picture: Getty Images)
‘Everyone’s like, “Did you see Francis Ngannou, what he did to Francis Ngannou?” It’s like the guy’s feet [were] stuck in mud. He’s just sitting there, didn’t do anything, and just got nailed with a big shot. So yeah, if I get hit with that shot, I’m screwed. But I don’t believe he’s going to hit me with those shots.’ (Picture: Getty Images)

AJ had plenty to say for himself too, though. During the relaxed but sometime spiky chit-chat, the former heavyweight champ admitted that anything other than a KO in his favour is like a defeat. Joshua was asked if he thinks he has to knock Paul out early to prove himself. He answer left no uncertainty. ‘100%,’ he replied. ‘I have to go in there, stomp all over him, inflict pain and land that right hand that he says is my only weapon.’ (Picture: Getty Images for Netflix)
