USC Aiken to offer new bachelor’s in electrical engineering

AIKEN, Sc. (WJBF)- The University of South Carolina Aiken has announced it will be adding a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering beginning Fall 2026.

The university has mechanical and chemical engineering already and they believe electrical engineering would be a great addition.

This degree program will focus on educating students to design, build, test and maintain electrical and electronic systems.

It also benefits the region as it will get students prepared to work within the CSRA as scientist and skilled electrical engineers.

The dean for the college of sciences and engineering explains how the curriculum is built.

“We used our engineering advisory board, which has our stakeholders from throughout the region to build the curriculum that’s really needed for this area. So of course, with the site as it is being such a large employer of engineers, we are concentrating on power systems, control systems of critical infrastructure, that kind of thing,” said Scott McKay.

McKay also said there’s certain access students will have within this program.

“Our engineering program will move into spaces within that advanced manufacturing collaborative. This, of course, give our students not only access to wonderful equipment, but access to tremendous, exceptional scientists and engineers that are associated with the National Laboratory.”

Students interested in the degree but start school before Fall 2026, can complete a year of prerequisites that will meet the requirements for this degree.
