TV host Richard Osman has shared how The Traitors might have hinted that Matthew will play a ‘big’ role in the episodes to come.

The latest season of the BBC series ended on a huge cliffhanger last week after creative director Matthew Hyndman surprised the nation by offering the hooded brigade – Rachel and Stephen – an opportunity to seduce him.

In Friday night’s episode, previously under-the-radar contestant Matthew won the chance to ask the Traitors two questions at a Church confessional and quickly tried to make the most of the opportunity.

After the Traitors claimed their next murder would be Jessie, Matthew instructed them to go ahead and kill his co-star off. By doing so, they could then seduce him to join their treacherous ranks.

‘Do we have a deal?’ he dramatically proclaimed, with viewers now waiting with bated breath to see if the duo will take him up on his offer tonight.

Several fans pointed out how unexpected this twist was, especially since up until this episode, Matthew’s hardly been on screen or involved in any vital aspects of the gameplay.

Appearing on the Rest is Entertainment podcast with co-host Marina Hyde, she acknowledged he was a lesser-known contestant, which meant ‘it means so much more when he walked into the church and was like: “I’m ready to do a deal with you”.’

Richard agreed, explaining: ‘So, oftentimes you will go light on someone in the edit because you know that they’re a big player later on,’ with Marina adding: ‘There’ll be more coming.’

So, far from out of nowhere, it very well might be that Matthew’s utter lack of screentime was completely intentional by the producers to keep viewers hooked by the time this twist came around.

What does Metro think of Matthew’s plan?

Our reporter Rebecca Cook shared her thoughts on his bold proposal…

If this is the case, could it mean the Traitors agree to Matthew’s shocking proposition, and we see him invited in as a green-cloaked fiend in the banished Fiona’s place?

The risky tactic has every chance of backfiring as well, however, as game theorist Dante Kalise told Metro.

‘What can backfire for some converted Traitors is that if they have been making consistent decisions, being a Traitor makes them shift that decision pattern, so they become instantaneously unreliable.

Meanwhile, murdered Faithful Reece told Metro he believes Matthew’s move has backed the Traitors into a corner.

Not least because just earlier that day, he was voted ‘fairest of them all’ by the rest of the castle, making him one of the most trustworthy players.

‘Rachel and Stephen can’t go to breakfast the next day and start spreading heinous things about Matthew, about how he’s untrustworthy, because we just voted that he’s not,’ he pointed out, adding that if they do, then Matthew might notice and make his own deductions.

The Traitors returns to BBC One at 8pm tonight.
