Skukuza Golf Club, situated within South Africa’s iconic Kruger National Park and often referred to as the “wildest golf course in the world,” has been closed until further notice as heavy rainfall and flooding continue to affect the region.
Persistent downpours over recent days have left large parts of the area waterlogged, with additional rainfall forecast for the coming week, raising further safety concerns.
Update
Providing an update on Thursday, the club confirmed the closure in a statement shared on its official Facebook page.
“Due to the current heavy rainfall and flooding in the area, Skukuza Golf Club is closed until further notice. We will share updates and advise as soon as it is safe for us to reopen,” the statement read.
The club also expressed concern for those affected by the severe weather.
“Our thoughts are with everyone in the local community affected by these conditions. Please stay safe and take care during this time.”
The closure comes amid broader weather-related disruptions across parts of the Kruger National Park, where flooding has impacted access roads and facilities, prompting authorities to urge visitors to remain vigilant and monitor official updates.
Gates closed
The severe weather has also impacted access to the wider Kruger National Park.
Several entrance gates have been temporarily closed due to flooding and unsafe conditions, prompting South African National Parks (SANParks) to issue daily updates.
Visitors have been advised to monitor official SANParks communication channels closely, with many forced to postpone trips to the country’s most famous game reserve until conditions improve.
SANParks has urged the public to prioritise safety, as rainfall continues to affect roads, river crossings, and infrastructure within the park.
Wandering the fairways
The stories of elephants – and other wild animals – wandering the fairways and tee boxes at the Skukuza Golf Club is stuff of legend.
Playing 18 holes at the course is certainly a unique experience!
It’s not so much the bunkers and water hazards golfers need to be wary off, but rather the wildlife that roams freely.
