The police chief at the centre of a row over banning fans from attending a football match in Birmingham will retire from his post later today.

Craig Guildford, Chief Constable for West Midlands Police, is expected to announce he is stepping down from the role at about 4pm today.

Earlier this week, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said she had lost confidence in him after he gave incorrect evidence to MPs over the force’s decision to ban the fans from the match last year.

He has also faced calls all week to resign, but refused to step down from his position.

His retirement means that he will still be able to receive his full pension, the Guardian reported.
