Liverpool have been urged to sign Tottenham centre-back Micky van de Ven after losing out to Manchester City in the race for Marc Guehi.

Arne Slot‘s side came close to signing Guehi for £35 million in the closing stages of the summer transfer window before Crystal Palace stopped the move.

Guehi is now finalising a £20m move to Manchester City this weekend having missed Palace’s 2-1 defeat to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

Liverpool remain in the market for a new central defender due to the uncertainty over Ibrahima Konate’s future as the France international’s contract is due to expire at the end of the season.

Chelsea TV commentator and talkSPORT pundit Jason Cundy believes Van de Ven, who joined Spurs in a £43m deal from Wolfsburg in 2023, would be the perfect addition to Liverpool’s defence.

‘Here’s the thing, if I’m Liverpool I’m going after Van de Ven,’ Cundy told talkSPORT after Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Burnley on Saturday.

‘That’s what I would do, I would absolutely go all out. They lost out on Guehi, Van de Ven is the next big thing at centre-half.

‘He’s perfect for Liverpool if they want to play a high line. I’m going straight after him.’

Meanwhile, Slot says he understands the frustration from Liverpool supporters after boos were heard at Anfield following the 1-1 draw with Burnley on Saturday.

‘In my head it wasn’t a boo, but in my head it was frustration as well,’ Slot said.

‘We are Liverpool and we play against Burnley – and we have to give them credit [for] how they defended, cleared balls off the line, all the things you want to see if you are a Burnley manager, players that try to do everything to prevent us from scoring – but if we, as Liverpool, are not disappointed anymore by having a draw at home against Burnley then something is completely wrong.

‘I completely understand the frustration. I can tell you I have the same and the players definitely have the same frustration as the fans have.’
